Haptic feedback - gets physical

 Tactus Technology

Guess it was about time for something like this to "surface" :) What's it about? Well let me tell ya one or few things 'bout it. It's a new way to interact with your smartphone, tablet or any smart appliances you may plan to upgrade to.

If you ever wrote an e-mail using your tablet's touchscreen and then used your qwerty feature phone to type a text message, you might have wondered how it would be to use that physical keyboard instead of the virtual one displayed on-screen.

Today all that's about to change thanks to the Tactus Technology and its "appearing and disappearing" haptic user interface that translates into a "physical keyboard that rises from a flat touchscreen". Some of you may wonder: "What kind of sorcery is this?" :) It's as real as it gets, so now sit back and relax cause it's "welcome to the future" time.

The ChildPad

 Archos ChildPad

Today is Children's Day in Romania and I'll start this post by wishing everyone out there a very Happy Children's Day! All ya adults - this goes for you too, remember you were children once.

So, what's this about? Well today I'll tell you about a tablet that's designed specially for children but first let's start with the specs:

 - 1GHz ARM Cortex processor
 - 1GB of RAM
 - 4GB of onboard storage
 - microSD card slot
 - 7 inch touchscreen with 840x480 resolution
 - Android ICS

Judging by these hardware specs most of the apps and child games would run just fine. The tablet will also feature "Alvin and the Chipmunks" exclusive content like: clips, pictures, themes and an online game. Parental controls are also present and there's the AppsLib app store instead of the Google Play store.

All in one this seems to be a bargain given its US $129.99 price, considering that you can keep children away from messing with your iPad or Xoom. Have fun!

Tablet with an attitude

 Dell Latitude 10

Windows 8 is just around the corner and many of us are wondering about its hardware requirements from a more portable point of view...
Here's where Dell comes in with its Latitude 10: dual core Atom processor, 2 GB of ram, 128 GB SSD, Intel integrated graphics, 10.1 inch screen with 1366x768 resolution and a fingerprint reader.
As for the battery life, it should be able to last up to 8 to 12 hours depending on the usage and the system's configuration.

iOS and Android are tough contenders for Microsoft in the mobile segment. The user's preferences, hardware performance, price, availability and more - will determine the next step in the mobile world evolution and we'll get the chance to witness it.

Thunderbolt Mobo

 The Asus P8Z77-V Premium

I remember the old days when I used to tweak the desktop pc, upgrading it with a new processor or gfx card and how I also used to overclock them, sometimes with the risk of a guarantee void... Today I prefer the extra mobility so the desktop pc's are not my weapon of choice anymore but from time to time there's innovation and that's something I can't ignore.

Let's see what's this baby capable of: ATX motherboard with Intel Z77 chipset - supports LGA1155 processors and features four DDR3 DIMM memory slots to up to 32GB of RAM, four PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 slots, two PCIe 2.0 x1 slot, WiFi and Bluetooth V4.0. Connectivity-wise, it has six SATA 6.0 Gbps, three SATA 3.0 Gbps, one mini-SATA 3.0 Gbps with onboard 32GB SSD, two Gigabit Ethernet, six USB 3.0, six USB 2.0, one display port, HDMI and one Thunderbolt port.

Intel's high-speed I/O Thunderbolt technology was released on the Apple MacBook Pro and it has recently been integrated in notebooks like the Asus G75VW, but we were yet to see it on desktop PC's.

There's no word on pricing yet but if you're a desktop PC enthusiast this one's for you.

One's spare

 The SpareOne phone

What's up everyone? All this tech running in the wild getting in on a collision course with our own very lives... Have you ever tried to teach someone how to use their smartphone or tablet when they don't have even the slightest ideea? If the answer's a "yes" with a capital Y then you know what I'm talking about, if not I can recommend this to improve one's anger management :)

Fast forward to today: How many times your smartphone got its battery drained when you need it the most? Guess the answer would be "countless". Sometimes you can blame it on the likes of "Angry Birds" or on streaming YouTube videos. However you can also get a backup dumbphone like the SpareOne phone.

The SpareOne phone was featured at CES 2012 and it can last for 15 years (no typo) on a single AA battery and all you can do with it is make and receive phone calls. Emergency calls can be made with or without a SIM card installed. The 10 hour talk time is a significant drop from 15 years, but if you are going to use it for emergencies only then the talk time is more than acceptable. The SpareOne has no display at all and looks almost like a remote control, the volume button is on the left, standard keys to accept or deny calls, number keys, power button, and it also features a lock/unlock key.
Alan Cymberknoh the designer of this device says it uses the SpareOne as a backup phone for when his iPhone runs out of juice: “I have pre-set my important numbers on it - home, office, family - so when people call me, I pick up on my SpareOne.” All this seems usefull, don't you think? See ya!

Wirelessly charged

Samsung Galaxy S3 wireless charging kit

The S3 launched on May 3rd at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2012 event in London. I won’t get into much details cause tech specs and reviews about the S3 are widely spread.

The Wireless Charging Kit is one of the accessories that will be launched sometime later this year for the Galaxy S3 and it would be able to provide charging from a distance of up to 2 meters. The delay could be related to Samsung’s recently formed “Alliance for Wireless Power” with Qualcomm.

This tech is not exactly a breaktrough but it seems that Samsung is keen on succeeding where others have failed. What's next? Guess only time will tell.

Gingerbread on Atom

 Xolo X900

And here we are ladies and gents, we’ll be witnessing yet another milestone in the mobile industry. Lava (an Indian mobile phones company) is preparing to launch the Xolo smartphone which, hardware wise, runs on an Atom platform. As the OS is concerned the weapon of choice would be Android Gingerbread at launch with an update to ICS following up shortly.

I know y’all geeks are eager for some specs so here they are: 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2460 processor, 1 GB of ram, 16GB of internal memory, screen size of 4.3”@1024x600 pixels resolution, 8MP main camera with Flash, a front camera of 1.3MP, micro HDMI out. The handset is also NFC (near field comm.) ready. All those goodies are packed in a form factor that measures a mere 123x63x10.99 mm.

At first glance the specs are on par with the last year’s high end devices but do keep in mind that this is an Atom processor on which a PC version of Windows might work just fine.

From now on we should get used to see the “intel inside” logo on smartphones as well. But how soon is now and how’s that Xolo for a change? See ya!

Take your body to the next level

 SlimKicker

Say wha? That's right folks that right there is an interesting and revolutionary app. So, grab your iOS device and give it a try. Not convinced yet? That's ok, I can't blame you given some low-quality apps laying around the app store.
What's this about? Well this is the real deal if you wanna loose some weight - and look cool at the same time!

This is a level-up game and point-based program. You start by tracking your diet, where whole foods are worth more points than processed foods. It's similar to Weight Watchers, but in reverse. The thing is most people regain weight because they never learn long-term habits and return back to bad habits after they're done with the diet. SlimKicker, on the other hand is all about learning proper nutrition, portion control, and acquiring important habits. In addition to challenges, SlimKicker also offers tools such as a calorie counter, a fitness tracker and resources.

I'm glad to see that there are still people keen on innovation, congrats to all those who made SlimKicker the real deal!

The (S)martphone

 Sony Xperia S

Innovation is scarce and mere upgrades are paramount… The Xperia S is in between but has everything it takes to take on the top dogs.
So, let’s see what the S has onboard: Snapdragon platform with a 1.5Ghz dual core processor, 1GB of ram, Adreno 220 GPU, 32GB of storage, 4.3 inch display of HD resolution @1280x720 pixels, 12MP camera with autofocus and Exmor R sensor for low light conditions along with 1080p video recording.

Connectivity-wise there’s WiFi(b/g/n), Bluetooth, NFC(near field communication), DLNA, USB on the go, micro-USB and HDMI 2.0. All this in a slim form factor measuring only 10.6 mm in depth.

The Xperia S is running on Android 2.3 with the ICS update coming up soon. Anyway the Sony’s Timescape user interface offers enough functionality and eye-candy for the average user :)  On the gaming side the “PlayStation Certified” feature allows for playing PlayStation Suite games.

The device’s design mixes the classic form factor with a transparent strip which cuts through the base of the device in which the antenna is embedded - it also illuminates and indicates where the on-screen buttons are placed.

Sony really nails it with this product, it really adds the “S” letter back into the “Smartphone” wor(l)d.

Switch cards – webOS style

 Cardswitcher 2.0 for iOS

Well, webOS is no more but that doesn’t stops enthusiasts from innovating. Cardswitcher brings some of that webOS’s multitask interface style and functionality to iOS.
The result is quite interesting to say the least, this jailbreak tweak is a true alternative for the default iOS app switcher. You have to have your iDevice jailbreaked in order to install this tweak. So, what are you waiting for? Give it a try!

Hardware wise this “excitement” is powered by a 1.2 Ghz dual core processor, 1GB of ram and a  PowerVR SGX540 Gpu. When it comes to storage it has 16 or 32 GB of internal memory with the possibility to upgraded it up to 32 GB more by using its microSD card slot.

Android 3.2 Honeycomb runs the show until the planned update to Android 4.0 ICS would be available later on to even better handle the AT200’s “excitement”.  The battery life extends up to 8hrs depending on usage.
The best contenders of AT200 are: Asus Transformer Prime, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and iPad(2012).

15" Pro

 Apple's MacBook Pro 15"

I gotta tell you folks, I have a thing for fine engineering. This baby right here is manufactured from a single piece of aluminum, thus replacing many parts with just one resulting the "unibody" MacBook Pro.

 Let's round up the specs:

 Display: 15 inch
 Processor: Intel Core i7 2.2GHz quad-core
 Ram: 4GB @1333MHz

XT311 - Moto's Fire

 Motorola Fire XT311

Let's take the word "phone" as an example, how many of you think of "smartphones" when you hear it? And the answer would be - many :)
Nowadays smartphones come in all kind of "flavors": iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, meeGo, Symbian and others. It wasn't long ago that "cheap" was similar to low quality products. The game has changed - this time in the buyer's interest. Now let's "light" this "Fire" up. Steady, ready and go :)

Specs wise, under the hood there's the most typical hardware available: an ARM 11 clocked at 600 mhz, 256mb of RAM, WiFi b/g/n, and bluetooth 2.1. OS wise - Gingerbread (Android 2.3) runs the show and adds value to the "Fire". The reception is good - no dropped calls, messaging is a breeze thanks to the hardware qwerty keyboard (Blackberry styled) although the user can opt for the software one as well. The overall built quality is above average and the handset feels good in hand.

The 3MP camera takes some good snapshots given the proper lighting conditions are provided - no autofocus or flash for this price tag though. The battery backup is not the best there is out there but it can get you through the day and the "People centric" widget by Moto along with the low ram (only 256mb) can lead to occasional lags in the user interface.

To sum it up - the Fire delivers the "bang for the buck".

Be mighty big - Gingerbread flavored :)

Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 "Go Big. Be Mighty."

Tablets come in different sizes and hardware configurations but in the end it all comes down to the user's needs. I remember the Dell Streak's reviews - too small for a tablet and too big for a phone. It was the first 5 inch screen tablet/phone.
Nowadays the Samsung Galaxy Note is a hit with its 5.3 inch screen but unlike the Dell's Streak the Note has both the hardware and the software to prove its worth among Android's top dogs.

The Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 is for the Galaxy S line of smartphones what the iPod Touch is for iPhone, meaning you get the Galaxy S smartphone's performance at a lower price without the phone function i.e. with GSM and 3G modules stripped off. Still, the device has an earpiece and a microphone built in so calls through wifi are possible whether you use Yahoo, Skype or other voip(voice over ip) solution and the front facing camera makes video calling a viable option too.

I was a bit skeptical about a 5 inch device but the hands-on experience was better than what I was expecting. Hardware wise the device has the same specs as the Galaxy S smartphone. Under the hood there's a 1Ghz Hummingbird processor that powers an Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

 Hummingbirds and gingerbreads... funny :)

The performance is fluid, there are no hiccups and the TouchWiz interface adds to the eye candy although I personally prefer the vanilla experience. Android Market makes up for 50% of this device cause of the huge apps and games selection. Videos look great on the 5 inch screen, audio output is great in case you use some quality headphones - the stock ones are not state of the art but get the job done. I haven't played the latest Android game titles on it but all I can say is Angry Birds runs great on it :)

The internet experience is pleasant. All the flash videos and animations loaded flawlessly although I'm certain that there are some sites out there in the wild that would stress the hardware, keep in mind that this is not a dual-core platform. At 2500 mAh, the battery life is above average but it also depends on the user's usage style - light or heavy.

Overall this is a great product, more like a niche product, it also features a GPS module and a 3MP camera with flash and autofocus making up for a good price/quality ratio.
I recommend it to anyone who doesn't have an Android powered smartphone or to anyone in search of a small tablet or PDA.
